Project Description.

A major donation from Mr. Delos A. Blodgett resulted in the construction of an orphanage in 1908 at the site of 920 Cherry, which housed children until 1948. The facility was gifted to the Mary Free Bed Guild for rehabilitative medicine and polio survivors until 1976. Since then, the building had fallen into considerable disrepair and had been designated as a Brownfield property. Cornerstone provided a complete transformation. The 1950’s additions were removed from the front of the building, and the original 1908 appearance of the building was restored in compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s guidelines. The restored building is LEED Gold certified by the US Green Building Council.

Inner City Christian Federation is the occupant of the renovated building, providing meeting rooms and interactive learning environments, as well as enhancing staff synergy as program and administrative staff work side by side. Restored and reoccupied the building represents the vision of the original donor, D.A. Blodgett. More recently, on several floors of the building, open office spaces have been reconfigured to accommodate private offices with glass wall systems and updated finishes. ICCF’s service for homeless persons and inadequately housed families in Grand Rapids will continue the legacy of a wonderful “Home for Homeless Children”.

“ICCF will create an active symbol of transformation for the community by restoring instead of demolishing the Blodgett Building.”
