Project Description.

Lake City is a rural community identified as a high risk area in regards to youth and adult health aspects. The area was in need of a community-based facility that offered opportunities for fitness programs, wellness education, mentoring opportunities, and disaster relief facilities capable of shelter and food preparation. Cornerstone worked with the Lake City Area Schools to maximize funding sources and combine the Districts’ need for updated athletic facilities with the regional needs of a facility for community health, safety, and well being. Cornerstone worked closely with the district throughout the bond planning and master planning process to identify needs and priorities of both the school district and the community. Design and construction were carefully planned to avoid disruptions to the school year.

This multi-phase project was the result of a successful bond issue to upgrade and provide needed additions to the existing school buildings in the district. The existing middle school became the elementary school and received new additions for classrooms, a cafetorium space, an upgraded kitchen and new café serving area, and music room. Additional upgrades included main office modifications and finish updates, upgrades to site elements. At the high school, a major addition provided necessary space for a large commons area, new gym with locker rooms, weight room, and upper level running track, a new administrative office wing, and a renovated media center. During the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic, a Wellness Center at the high school became a high priority and has further increased access to on site medical facilities for students. Cornerstone previously worked with the district on many sinking fund projects including toilet room upgrades, wood shop upgrades, conversion of an existing outbuilding into a preschool and window replacements.
