Catholic Social Services
Grand Rapids Michigan
Size: 24,500 SF

This building was the former Fanatorium Bowling Alley located in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. The single story brick and block building utilized huge open web steel girders to span it’s 100’ width. Approximately 75% of the floor was excavated 60” down to allow room for an upper 7,500 sf mezzanine that cuts through the building on an angle. The 24,000sf renovation included complete mechanical, electrical, and plumbing upgrades as well as a new roof and eight new 6’x12’ window openings on the north and south sides of the building.

The building is now home to the Catholic Social Services and due to the nature of their services Cornerstone Architects created a warm and inviting atmosphere with gentle curves and interesting angles, avoiding the possibility of the space becoming too clinical. A simulated bowling alley was even created with a maple floor and bowling pins at the end of a long hallway.
