Tom Nemitz serves as the President of Cornerstone Architects with offices in Grand Rapids and Traverse City.  He grew up in Traverse City by way of Chicago and moved to Grand Rapids in 1982.

A graduate of Lawrence Technological University in Architecture, Tom has practiced architecture since 1982, with full licensure in 1987.  He is registered in several states, including Michigan.  Tom started Cornerstone Architects in 1989 with a focus on preservation, historic renovation, and adaptive reuse of un-loved and underutilized existing structures.  With over 100 individual renovations and growing under his guidance, he has been recognized by several organizations for his role in the revitalization of Grand Rapids during the 1989 – 2018 time period, along with preservation awards in Flint, Durand, Lansing, Traverse City, and others.   His professional interests also include higher education projects, K-12 education projects, and hospitality-based projects.

Tom is married to his wife of 38+ years, who is also employed at Cornerstone.  They have three wonderful children and two very special grandchildren.  His hobbies include construction related projects, restoration, collection and repair of automobiles (he has three children!), travel, hiking, all things architectural and appreciating the amazing opportunity to work with and play with friends dating back 45 years.

Tom has stated that he cannot imagine another profession that is as fulfilling as architecture.  Truly picking a profession you love will allow you to never work a day in your life.
